*Campbell, V. (2012). How Mind Emerges from Brain: A Discussion of Who's in Charge? Free Will and the Science of the Brain, by Michael Gazzaniga, PhD (BSP 82). Brain Science Podcast, No. 82.

 Course Description

Description: In his latest book Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain respected neuroscientist Michael S. Gazzaniga explores how the discoveries of neuroscience impact how we see ourselves as human beings. After providing a brief review of 20th century neuroscience, and even some of the work from the past decade, Dr. Gazzaniga concludes that nothing neuroscience has discovered changes the fact that "we are personally responsible agents and are to be held accountable for our actions”. Gazzaniga's position contrasts with those who think that recent discoveries show that the brain creates the mind in a solely "upwardly causal" way, and who argue that since much of what our brain does is outside our conscious awareness or control, we should not be held responsible for our actions. Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain presents a convincing argument against this common position.

Objectives: Upon completion of this podcast/transcript-based course, participants will be able to: 1). Explain Michael Gazzaniga’s past work with Roger Sperry. 2). Indicate the contributions that historical figures have made to the concepts of mind, brain, freewill and determinism, including Donald Hebb, Karl Lashley Sir John Eccles, and many more. 3). Understand Gazzaniga’s construct of “emergence”, and how it changes the way neuroscientists might better conceive of levels of organizations that go beyond simple cause and effect determinism. 4). Articulate how neuroscience discoveries and formulations affect questions of law and justice.

Targeted Audience: Psychologists, physicians, neuroscientists, philosophers.
